The Minister of Military Production General Mohamed Salah, met with Mr Robert Valk, Founder and CEO of Green Tech Egypt & Renergy Group Partner, Mr Ali Al-Dhaheri, CEO of Tadweer (Tadweer is a fully owned subsidiary of ADQ), based in the UAE, and Mr Talal Al Zain, from Bahrain and advisory board member of Renergy Group Partners, also attended, to discuss the progress of Egypt’s first Waste-to-Energy plant. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Military Production’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.

Minister Mohamed Salah highlighted the ministry’s commitment to national projects promoting sustainable development and environmental investment. The plant, located in Abu Rawash, Giza Governorate, will process 1,200 tons of municipal solid waste daily and generate 30 MW of electricity per hour. The project, a collaboration between the Ministry of Military Production, Green Tech Egypt, and OAK Holding, aims to improve Egypt’s climate security and living conditions.

Mr Robert Valk appreciated the ongoing coordination among project partners and the Egyptian government’s efforts to expand clean energy projects. Mr Mohamed Eid Bakr, the media advisor to the Minister of State for Military Production, emphasised that this meeting is part of a series of reviews to ensure the project’s successful implementation.

Mr Robert Valk, Founder and CEO of Renergy Group Partners, presented the Mega Scale Hydrogen Project during the trade mission “The Green Hydrogen Bridge.” This event was organized by the Dutch government Agency RVO and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt.

The Mega Scale Hydrogen Project stands out by combining unique geographical features— the sea, level terrain, and mountain areas—while operating entirely off-grid. With the integration of a hydro-storage reservoir, the project ensures a consistent production cycle, both day and night, throughout the year. With a focus on the European off-take market, the trade mission proved highly productive, offering a platform for exchanging innovative ideas and strategies to move the green hydrogen industry forward.

The Green Hydrogen Bridge” is a Multi-Stakeholder Strategy Workshop designed to bring together key figures from the Egyptian and Dutch green hydrogen sectors. The workshop featured government representatives, policymakers, private sector companies, and research institutions. By facilitating collaboration and exchanging knowledge, the event aims to accelerate the development and deployment of green hydrogen solutions in Egypt. Participants had the opportunity to connect with valuable stakeholders and explore new business opportunities.

On March 25th, Giza Governor General Ahmed Rashed held a meeting with Mr Robert Valk, CEO of Renergy Group Partners and Green Tech Egypt, to discuss the progress of the Waste-to-Energy project in Abu Rawash, Giza. 

During the meeting, Mr Valk provided updates on the project’s status, stating that the preliminary designs, including architecture, boilers, turbines, electrical specifications, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and water and sewerage systems, are completed.

Mr Valk reached a noteworthy milestone by handing over all project drawings to Governor General Ahmed Rashed, signifying progress in the project implementation. General Ahmed Rashed expressed his support for the project and assured that he would closely monitor the forthcoming steps.

Founder and CEO of Renergy Group Partners & Green Tech Egypt, Mr Robert Valk, participated in a panel discussion titled ‘Chasing Green—Clean and Renewable Energies’ at EGYPES 2024. EGYPES is an important platform and conference for industry leaders to discuss the advancements and challenges within the energy and renewable energy industry.

The different panel discussions at EGYPES 2024 were dynamic exchanges of ideas and insights, shedding light on the remarkable strides made in the renewable energy sector. Dr Yasmin Fouad, the Minister of Environment, held a meeting with Mr Robert Valk, Founder and CEO of “Renergy Group Partners & Green Tech Egypt,” to discuss the latest developments in implementing the solid municipal waste conversion to electrical energy station in Abu Rawash. This project, the first of its kind in Egypt, is crucial in paving the way for similar endeavors in various provinces. The meeting, attended by Dr Tarek El-Araby, the CEO of the Waste Management Regulatory Authority, focused on the project’s progress, procedural, logistical, and investment challenges, and proposed solutions. The total investment cost for the project is approximately $120 million, with a capacity of processing 1200 tons per day, generating 30 megawatts per hour. The project is executed under the contract signed between the alliance (National Organization for Military Production and Renergy Group Partners) and the Giza Governorate, with the collaboration of several ministries.

Dr Yasmin Fouad emphasized that this project marks the beginning of a series of waste-to-energy projects. The Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with partner ministries and entities, supported by the Cabinet, is working to provide equal opportunities for participation, encouraging investment in this field for its environmental and economic benefits to the Egyptian state. The project represents a significant step in Egypt’s localization of waste-to-energy technology and strengthens the partnership with the private sector.

Furthermore, Dr Yasmin Fouad highlighted that the project will maximize the utilization of waste by reducing the quantity destined for final disposal, mitigating emissions from the waste sector as a contributor to climate change. The project brings both social and economic benefits by providing a new energy source. It represents an inspiring initiative in preparing the supportive climate for waste-to-energy projects in Egypt through partnerships with the private sector.

Mr Robert Valk, Founder and CEO of “Renergy Group Partners & Green Tech Egypt,” presented the efforts made in the past period to progress the project, including completing the environmental impact assessment, finalizing the project design, and coordinating with various partner entities to complete necessary procedures. He discussed the challenges faced during implementation and proposed solutions, commending the efforts of ministries and partner entities in project preparation.

Minister Mohamed Salah welcomed the Renergy Group Partners delegation, emphasising Egypt’s interest in creating a supportive environment for environmental investment. He highlighted the state’s commitment to tackling climate change and involving the private sector in projects that promote environmental sustainability. The collaboration between Military Production, Green Tech Egypt, and OAK Holding in the Renergy Group Partners alliance was emphasised.

In cooperation with Green Tech and OAK, the minister mentioned that the Ministry of Military Production has initiated the executive steps to establish a waste treatment station in Abu Rawash, Giza Governorate. The project aims to convert solid municipal waste into electrical energy, with a capacity of 30 megawatts per hour, processing 1200 tons of waste per day. The minister stressed the ministry’s participation in various national projects to support comprehensive and sustainable development, utilising the surplus production capacity of its diverse companies.

Minister Mohamed Salah highlighted the commitment of relevant authorities to swiftly implement the waste-to-energy conversion station project, aligning with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives to enhance citizens’ quality of life.

The waste-to-energy conversion project in Abu Rawash aims to convert 1200 tons of waste daily into electricity, generating 30 megawatts per hour. The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy specialists are assessing the feasibility of connecting the station to the industrial transformers station in Giza. Coordination is ongoing to determine the cable path between Abu Rawash and Giza, enabling the project’s executing company, “Renergy Group Partners,” to proceed with necessary drawings and technical work for implementation.

Dr. Yasmin Fouad, the Minister of Environment, praised the fruitful collaboration between ministries over five years, working towards an integrated waste management system in Egypt. She emphasised the significance of the waste-to-energy project in Abu Rawash for environmental conservation and sustainable development.

General Hisham Ameen, the Minister of Local Development, affirmed support for the waste-to-energy project, highlighting its uniqueness in Egypt and its role in the integrated municipal waste system.

The meeting attendees included Engineer Emil Helmy Elias, Deputy Chairman of the National Authority for Military Production, and key officials from the ministry.

General Khaled Foudh, the Governor of South Sinai, has expressed his strong support for the ambitious Mega Scale Green Hydrogen project in the South Sinai Region during his meeting with Mr Robert Valk, Founder and CEO of Renergy Group Partners and Green Tech Egypt. The Mega Scale Green Hydrogen aims to produce more than 400,000 tons of Green Hydrogen every year. Led by Renergy Group Partners, in collaboration with the Ministry of Military Production (MOMP), the project has gained significant acceleration since it received approval from Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly last month. General Khaled Foudh also discussed the project with the Minister of MOMP, His Excellency Mohamed Salah.

The meeting between General Khaled Foudh and Mr Robert Valk underscores Egypt’s commitment to advancing green hydrogen technology and promoting sustainable development. This project is a major milestone in Egypt’s clean and sustainable energy pursuit. It aligns with the decision made by the Cabinet this year, laying the groundwork for establishing the National Council for Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. The successful partnership between the Governorate of South Sinai and the Ministry of Military Production highlights their collaborative spirit.

General Khaled Foudh supports the proposal to build the Green Hydrogen Production Plant within the governorate’s boundaries, acknowledging the natural and topographic advantages of the location. Furthermore, the project is expected to boost the technology and labour sectors by creating thousands of jobs and bringing cutting-edge hydrogen technology to South Sinai.

The meeting brought together key figures, including General Ahmed Mohammed Alexandrani, Secretary General of the Governorate; General Muhammad Shair, Assistant Secretary General; Mr Mabrouk Mohammed Al-Ghamrini, President of the City of Tor Sinai, and Engineer Mustafa Abdo Ahmed, Director of the General Administration for Planning and Urban Development in the South Sinai Governorate, as well as Mr Eslam Ramadan, Manager of Renergy Group Partners and Green Tech Egypt.

Minister Mohamed Salah emphasised that this project would have a far-reaching positive impact on the nation’s citizens and economy. He further stressed his unwavering commitment to closely monitoring the progress of the Renergy Group Partners, highlighting the importance of seamless coordination between the Ministry and all other involved parties and ministries to ensure the project’s timely execution.

Mr Robert Valk, CEO and founder of Green Tech Egypt & Renergy Group Partners, provided an overview of the project’s current status, especially the commencement of the waste-to-electricity power plant in Abu Rawash. The Ministry’s active involvement and cooperation with key partners like Green Tech Egypt and Renergy Group Partners are set to pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future for Egypt and its people.

The forum was organised with the support of the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation on September 12. The primary aim of the forum was to strengthen Egypt’s investment landscape by showcasing opportunities and facilitating partnerships between traditional and non-traditional financial institutions, investors, and corporations. This strategic initiative perfectly aligns with the Ministry of the Environment’s overarching vision, which seeks to guide Egypt toward a low-carbon, resilient economy capable of confronting the challenges posed by climate change.

Dr Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister, inaugurated the first edition of the Climate and Environmental Investment Forum in Egypt. Dr Madbouly expressed Egypt’s commitment to capitalising on the outcomes of COP27, held in Sharm El-Sheikh, by translating them into tangible measures for Egypt, African nations, and the broader community of developing countries.

Dr Yasmin Fouad, the Minister of the Environment, presided over the session themed “Integrated Waste and Sustainable Energy Management.” This session served as a platform for discussing success stories and investment prospects within the environmental and climate sector. Key participants included Dr Tarek El-Araby, Head of the Waste Management Regulatory Authority; Mrs Kerstin Deji, EU Green Project Manager from GIZ; Mr Ahmed Hassan, ABB Local Business Area Manager for Egypt and North and Central Africa; Mr Robert Valk, CEO of Renergy Group Partners; Mrs Heba Nayel, CEO of Papyrus; and Mr Moussa Khalil, CEO of Mozna. Dr Dalia Saqr, an expert in circular economy and climate change, moderated the session.

Dr Tarek El-Araby highlighted the substantial strides made in waste management through legislative and organisational efforts. The issuance of Egypt’s waste management law in 2020 and its executive regulations in 2022 marked a key moment in this regard. The Waste Management Regulatory Authority, overseeing waste management in Egypt, has been entrusted with formulating specifications, conducting cost-effective studies, and devising investment plans for waste management projects. Dr El-Araby also shed light on promising investment opportunities, including the conversion of waste into fodder and medicinal gelatin, as well as the extraction of biological minerals from e-waste. Notably, Renergy Group Partners initiated the first Waste-to-energy project in Abu Rawash. Dr Tarek El-Araby also unveiled other investment prospects in waste management, such as recycling used food oils for biodiesel production, creating alternative fuels from municipal and agricultural waste to reduce carbon emissions in cement factories, generating green hydrogen from waste, and transforming sewage stations into sources of electricity and alternative fuels. These initiatives are further incentivised by Egypt’s new investment laws and the coveted “golden license.”

Mr. Robert Valk, CEO of Renergy Group Partners, expressed his gratitude to Dr Yasmin Fouad for extending an invitation to the Environmental and Climate Investment Forum. He acknowledged Egypt’s growing interest in environmental and climate-related investments, focusing on municipal and medical waste sectors. Mr Valk lauded Egypt’s commendable efforts in waste management and expressed Renergy Group Partners’ keenness to collaborate with Egypt on human development, waste management, and capacity-building projects.

The Prime Minister, Dr Mostafa Madbouly, convened a meeting to deliberate upon a proposal presented by Renergy Group Partners to establish a mega green hydrogen plant within Egypt. Attendees at this meeting included key figures such as Dr Mohamed Shaker, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy; General Mohamed Salah El-Din, Minister of Military Production; Mr Robert Valk, CEO of Renergy Group Partners and Green Tech Egypt, the Project Implementing Company; Advisor Amjad Said, Legal Counsel to the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy; Engineer Alaa Hajar, Representative from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in the Technical Office; and Engineer Mohamed Abu El-Naga, Advisor to the Ministry of Military Production.

As disclosed by Ambassador Nader Saad, the spokesperson for the Cabinet’s presidency, the meeting centred around Renergy Group Partners’ proposal to establish a mega green hydrogen plant via foreign direct investments. The proposed project boasts a capacity of 400 thousand tons per annum, drawing its energy needs exclusively from a 15-gigawatt solar power plant. Furthermore, the facility’s production of green hydrogen will be channelled entirely towards European markets, with the project’s financial objectives aiming to achieve an annual revenue of one billion dollars. Notably, this initiative is also expected to generate substantial employment opportunities.

It was emphasised that an upcoming phase will encompass an in-depth feasibility assessment of the project, followed by identifying an optimal site for its implementation. Concluding the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed his approval of the project and emphasised the need for expediting practical assessments and investigations.

Renergy Group Partners hosted a highly important site inspection of its inaugural Waste-to-Energy power plant site following the observance of ‘World Environment Day.’ The event garnered attention from esteemed guests, including Dr Yasmin Fouad, the Minister of Environment; General Mohamed Salah, the Minister of Military Production; General Ahmed Rashed, the Governor of Giza; and Dr Tarek El-Araby, the head of WMRA (Waste Management Regulatory Authority).

The Concession Agreement, signed in April, marked a momentous collaboration between the National Authority for Military Production, Renergy Group Partners, Giza Governorate, and five ministries: Environment, Finance, Electricity, Local Development, and Military Production. This agreement was the outcome of an inclusive consultative process that involved the participation of the Council of State.

During the inspection, Minister Dr Yasmin Fouad expressed her gratitude to all participants for joining this auspicious occasion. The project boasts an investment cost of approximately $120 million, with a waste processing capacity of 1200 tons per day. The plant’s annual operating costs are estimated to be around $5.5 million, while it is expected to generate 30 MW per hour. The construction of the power plant is projected to take 24 months. Dr Yasmin Fouad emphasised that this week marks the celebration of ‘Environmental Investment Week,’ under the patronage of His Excellency the President of the Republic, in alignment with the National Strategy of Waste Management and Management Organization Law Waste No. 202 for 2020, and its executive decree. The preparations for this project commenced following the issuance of Cabinet Resolution No. 41 for 2019 on the tariff. It is a remarkable example of the Ministry’s commitment to promoting environmental investment by involving the community and engaging various stakeholders from all across Egypt.

Minister Mohamed Salah underscored that establishing the Abu Rawash Power Station results from joint efforts between Egypt’s public and private sectors. He expressed optimism regarding the project’s future, anticipating the creation of new job opportunities, achieving energy self-sufficiency, and adopting a modern and environmentally friendly waste treatment approach.

Governor Ahmed Rashed reaffirmed the Egyptian state’s commitment, under the leadership of President Abdul Fattah El-Sisi, to enhance the environment and realise the objectives outlined in Egypt’s Vision 2030. He expressed gratitude for the collaboration between the Giza Governorate and the Ministries of Environment, Military Production, and Local Development in initiating and expediting the project, with the ultimate goal of benefiting residents and improving their quality of life.

Mr Robert Valk, the CEO of Renergy Group Partners, commended the ministries and partner organisations’ efforts in the project’s preparation. Mr Valk emphasised the successful coordination and partnership that facilitated the implementation of this groundbreaking initiative. He expressed his expectation of continued collaboration in the future to replicate this experience in other locations across Egypt, aligning with the priorities of the Egyptian state and leveraging the knowledge gained during the project’s preparation phase.
