Cairo, 5 January 2022. Engineer Mohamed Ahmed Morsi, Minister of State for Military Production, received Mr Robert Valk, CEO of Green Tech Egypt, and Mr Gareth Brown, CEO of OAK Holding, leading a Renergy Group Partners delegation. At the ministry’s General Office, they reviewed the municipal solid-waste-to-electricity plant planned for Abu Rawash in Giza Governorate.

First phase in eight governorates

The meeting followed the four-party protocol signed in September 2021 by the ministries of Military Production, Local Development and Environment and Giza Governorate to allocate land in Abu Rawash. Acting on President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives and the Prime Minister’s continuing oversight, the first phase of waste-to-energy projects had been approved for eight (8) governorates, beginning with Giza at Abu Rawash.

Minister Morsi said the project could provide an immediate, sustainable way to treat municipal solid waste by converting it into clean, renewable energy. He said the Ministry of Military Production would apply its industrial, technological and human capabilities to major national projects that improve citizens’ lives.

He also noted that the global effects of the coronavirus pandemic and its variants had continued for two years, affecting economic activity, financial markets and international supply chains. Despite this, Egypt continued to protect the gains of the economic-reform programme launched in 2016 and to invest in national and development projects across sectors.

Technology and local industry

Mr Valk stressed the need for coordination among all organisations involved. He said the project could improve environmental, health and living conditions, reduce pollution and establish a national waste-management industry. A public consultation on the environmental impact assessment studies had been held the previous November, and Renergy Group Partners was committed to resolving implementation challenges.

Mr Brown welcomed the Egyptian government’s cooperation with the private sector to introduce waste-treatment and waste-to-energy expertise. He said Renergy Group Partners, working with Military Production, would provide innovative technology for the Giza plant in accordance with the environmental requirements of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Mr Mohamed Eid Bakr, media adviser and official spokesperson for the ministry, said cooperation with Renergy Group Partners supported technology transfer, deeper local manufacturing, greater added value, lower imports and foreign-currency savings.
