Eng. Hassan El Khatib, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, met Mr Robert Valk, Founder and CEO of Renergy Group Partners, and Mr Abdullah El Ebiary, Managing Director of Alvarez & Marsal Consulting, to review the green-hydrogen project in Sinai.
Role in Egypt’s energy strategy
The Minister said green-hydrogen projects are central to Egypt’s transition to clean energy and its efforts to attract foreign investment in renewable energy. He described the Sinai project as a sustainable-development model that can support the economy and strengthen Egypt’s position as a regional clean-energy hub. Al-Khatib added that the government is committed to supporting such projects.
Project configuration
Mr Abdullah Al-Ebiary, General Manager of Alvarez & Marsal Consulting, described the Sinai project as a significant development progressing quickly. He said it includes a 15 GW electrolyser and a system that stores water and pumps it to a height of 800 metres to generate energy when required. After all three phases are complete, the system is intended to provide up to 3.1 gigawatts of sustainable baseload energy.
Production and export
Mr Robert Valk said the project has the potential to become an important global source of green hydrogen and that the team has worked to establish integrated, sustainable infrastructure for continuous production.
He said Egypt’s investment environment supports innovation and sustainability. The first phase includes a desalination plant, a liquid-hydrogen production facility and a marine jetty for exports to Europe. Hydrogen would be shipped to the Italian port of Trieste and distributed by rail to several European countries, particularly Germany.
