On the second day of the ‘Egypt Can with Industry’ conference, Renergy was represented by Mr Talal Ali Al Zain and Mr Gareth Brown of OAK Investments Bahrain; Mr Valk, Mr Eslam Ramadam and Ms de Graaf of Green Tech Egypt; and General Mr Mounir Helal and Dr Mahmout Arafat of the Ministry of Military Production (MOMP).
The consortium partners discussed the future of green industry in Egypt, particularly waste-to-energy, with Dr Mahmout Arafat, personal adviser to His Excellency Minister General Morsi, and Dr Moutaz and Dr Kareem of Chemonics Egypt, the local consultancy partner.
Green Industry: Road to COP27
Mr Valk presented the first waste-to-energy project at Abou Rawash, Giza, during a second session, ‘Green Industry: Road to COP 27’. The audience included Her Excellency Madam Nabila Makram, Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, and a delegation of industry leaders. His Excellency Minister Engineer Mohamed Ahmed Morsi, Minister of Military Production, announced that construction would begin the following month, July 2022. The related conference report was published at shorturl.at/eloxA.
A 25-year operating model
Waste-to-energy was presented as a renewable energy source widely adopted around the world. In line with Egypt Vision 2030 and COP27, Renergy Group Partners planned to establish a new waste-to-energy industry in Egypt through a public-private partnership with MOMP. The stated benefits included replacing landfill, avoiding harmful CH4 methane emissions, protecting desert and seashore ecosystems, attracting foreign investment, transferring knowledge, increasing local production, creating highly skilled jobs and turning waste into sustainable energy.
The consortium developed a model intended to keep the project sustainable for 25 years on a tariff of 1.4 EGP/kWh and without a gate fee. It described this as the first project in the world to operate at that low tariff and level of efficiency. The model was also expected to reduce landfill and future clean-up costs while generating electricity-tariff revenue.
Flue-gas treatment and carbon use
Green Tech Egypt was developing a patent-pending flue-gas treatment system to meet BAT 2019 European Emission Regulations. The system was planned to be developed and built 100% in Egypt. A later step would make it easier to capture CO2 for agriculture, vertical farming or algae farming, supporting food security.
